Chaplin CT Community Profile & History
Chaplin, Connecticut is a rural town in the northeast corner of Connecticut. The town's lands are hilly and largely covered by forest, bisected from the northeast border to the southwest edge by the Natchaug River.
Chaplin's first known settler was Benjamin Chaplin, who arrived in the 1740's and lived off the land for several years before marrying Mary Ross in 1747. Soon thereafter, Chaplin built a large house and started a family. By the time of his death in 1795, Chaplin had amassed an estate of over two thousand acres.
In 1809, Chaplin was incorporated as an ecclesiastical society; it was granted town status in 1822. Industry quickly developed along the banks of the Natchaug River, with a paper mill built by Peter Lyon among the first establishments of note. By mid-century Chaplin boasted factories for the manufacture of silk, leather, hats and clothing among other products. Though most of the mills ceased operations in the early 20th century, agriculture and tourism remain staples of the local economy, with a National Historic District established around the old town center on Chaplin Street in 1978.
