Canterbury CT Community Profile & History

Canterbury, Connecticut is a small town in northeastern Connecticut.First settled circa 1690, Canterbury began life as a largely agricultural community, though the establishment of a gristmill in 1703 was a boon to early industry as small logging and fabric establishments were created.

In 1832, a Quaker schoolteacher named Prudence Crandall made history when she opened a school for black girls in town. Though the school was met with much resistance at the time, Crandall was eventually recognized for her integrationist efforts and the Prudence Crandall Museum was established in her honor at the schoolhouse. Today, Canterbury is a predominantly rural community with rolling hills, beautiful streams, and a lovingly preserved historical district at the center of town.
