Canaan CT Community Profile & History
Canaan, Connecticut is a small town in northwestern Connecticut. Nestled in the foothills of the Berkshire range, Canaan was first settled in 1738 and incorporated the following year. The town's early history centers on Falls Village, which was named for the Great Falls of the Housatonic at the western edge of town.
Now the site of Canaan's central historical district, Falls Village developed along the banks of the Housatonic River, where a series of stone canals were constructed for use in powering local factories. The canals leaked after opening in 1851, dashing Canaan's hopes of becoming an industrial giant in the region.
The northern region of the town (which ironically contains Canaan village) split off and was incorporated as North Canaan in 1858. Canaan's industrial base received a much-needed boost in 1912, when a hydroelectic dam was built at Housatonic Falls. Though largely residential in nature today, Canaan is still home to some small industries, and the hydroelectric station remains a major local employer.
Residents of Canaan enjoy multiple opportunities for outdoor recreation on nature trails in the hills on the outskirts of town and at parks along the river. The spectacular Housatonic Falls boasts an extensive trail system and remains a popular destination for visiting sightseers and townsfolk alike, while scenic Falls Village offers an array of antique homes, a classic New England town green and the rich cultural legacy of a history spanning nearly 300 years.
