Ashford CT Community Profile & History
Ashford, Connecticut is located in northern Connecticut on a tract purchased from Indians. The early settlement was located on the original thoroughfare between Hartford and Boston, and Ashford developed quickly as a result. Industry arrived in Ashford in the form of several carding, woolen, and tin factories established after the War of 1812.
Perhaps the single most notable business in the town's history was the Westford Glass Factory. At its peak the factory employed many skilled glass blowers and a troop of "choppers" to stoke the furnaces that kept its white heat around the clock. The ruins of Westford Glass Factory can still be observed today, and Westford bottles, if so labeled, are now prized antiques.
Newcomers to Ashford are drawn by its rural New England charm; the town boasts a picturesque country side, working farms, open meadows that were once farms, and historical homes still being lovingly maintained through the years. Rich in colonial history, Ashford looks to enjoy steady growth and a prosperous future through confident zoning regulations and careful planning.
