Palmer Lake CO Community Profile & History
Palmer Lake, Colorado is a small town just north of Colorado Springs in El Paso County. Situated along the Palmer Divide, a geological ridge which separates the Arkansas River and Platte River basins, the community was originally inhabited by the Ute, Kiowa, Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians. Homesteaders first settled here in the early 1860s, but it wasn't until after General William J. Palmer founded the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1870 that the area began to thrive. The lake that later bore his name became a crucial stop along the new railroad, as steam-powered trains stopped to refill here for the trip down Monument Hill. In 1882, Dr. William Finley Thompson purchased land here and plotted the town with the intention of building a health resort for wealthy travelers. While Thompson's grand designs fell through after impending bankrupcy drove him to flee from the area in 1891, he left the twin legacies of the Rocky Mountain Chataqua, a cultural institute for vacationers, and the sixty-one room Rockland Hotel.
While the turn of the century brought a decline in mineral resorts, the town persevered as a small agricultural community until 1958, when the opening of the Air Force Academy in nearby Colorado Springs brought a host of new jobs and residents to the area. A growing community with a wealth of gorgeous natural scenery, historic attractions and economic opportunities just minutes from downtown Colorado Springs, the town remains a wonderful place to live, work and explore.
A growing center for high-tech and defense industries in the American West, the Colorado Springs area is home to the United States Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base and several information technology firms, all of which provide thousands of jobs and a strong economic base. In fact, the region was recently identified as one of the nation's ten fastest-growing economies. Centrally located at the heart of the Front Range Urban Corridor, the area offers an outstanding quality of life, stunning natural scenery, easy accessibility to the major cities of the American southwest and some of the nation's most desirable real estate. Excellent opportunities for recreation and leisure abound in the nearby peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the sprawling city of Denver, and the many scenic resort communities of the surrounding area.
