Manitou Springs CO Community Profile & History
Manitou Springs, Colorado is a city near Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado. The city derives its name from two dozen mineral springs situated throughout the area, many of which have spigots that locals and tourists alike may drink from. The minerals present at each location change the flavor of the local water.
Manitou Springs was established in 1872 by the enterprising General William Palmer and Dr. William A. Bell, who recognized the great therapeutic and commercial potential of the boiling springs. They contracted John Bell, a noted landscaper from Chicago, who designed the city's layout to mirror that of a European Spa Town. Palmer and Bell's hopes were dashed by a subsequent financial crisis, but by the early 1900s the community had emerged as a health destination for people suffering from tuberculosis. The clean mountain air and mineral springs waters offered a healthy retreat for people arriving by rail from across the country.
While the turn of the century brought a decline in the popularity of mineral resorts, the city's fortunes were buoyed by a local tourist industry that continues to thrive and grow today. The surrounding mountains of Colorado's Front Range offer spectacular vistas, excellent hiking and outdoor recreation, and a vast array of historical attractions both natural and man-made. The fabled Manitou Springs and Pike's Peak Railway charts a course from the city to the top of one of America's most famous peaks. Revitalized by the formation of a National Historic District in the 1980s, the downtown area offers family-run inns, Bed and Breakfasts, great restaurants, and lovingly restored historic buildings.
