Falcon CO Community Profile & History
Falcon, Colorado is an unincorporated town 14 miles northeast of Colorado Springs. A railroad hub in the early 20th century, Falcon spent several decades as a quiet ranching community before experiencing rapid residential growth from the 1990s onward.
In 1881, the area was crossed by the railroads: first the Denver and New Orleans on a rail bed parallel to today's Eastonville Road, then the Chicago and Rock Island on a rail bed parallel to today's U.S. Route 24. On September 20, 1888, the first mention of the community appeared in the local newspaper, when it was announced that The Falcon Land and Town Company, associated with the Chicago Rock Island Railroad, were selling lots to individuals. By 1896, the new settlemnent was home to two hotels, a newspaper, six saloons, a pool hall, stockyards, two train depots, two general stores, a blacksmith shop and a school. The introduction of the automobile brought a decline in passenger rail traffic, and after a 1935 flood washed out the Colorado & Southern tracks, the Rock Island railroad junction closed. By 1975, only a small number of homes and the school remained.
In the early 1990s, the community began to enjoy renewed growth, with residential development once again proceeeding at a rapid pace. The area's population nearly doubled between 1990 and 2000, with several major retailers moving to the community in the past decade. 2004 saw the opening of Antler Creek, the longest golf course in the state and second-longest in the nation.
A growing center for high-tech and defense industries in the American West, the Colorado Springs area is home to the United States Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base and several information technology firms, all of which provide thousands of jobs and a strong economic base. In fact, the region was recently identified as one of the nation's ten fastest-growing economies. Centrally located at the heart of the Front Range Urban Corridor, the area offers an outstanding quality of life, stunning natural scenery, easy accessibility to the major cities of the American southwest and some of the nation's most desirable real estate. Excellent opportunities for recreation and leisure abound in the nearby peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the sprawling city of Denver, and the many scenic resort communities of the surrounding area. A growing site for relocation and new residential development, Colorado Springs remains a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family.
