Yuma AZ Community Profile & History

Yuma, Arizona is the economic and cultural center of southwestern Arizona. Situated on the eastern banks of the Colorado River along the California border, Yuma boasts gorgeous natural scenery and a strong economic base in tourism, transportation and agriculture. With a climate that mixes pure desert sunshine with the cool waters of the Colorado River and Gila Rivers, Yuma offers a year-round vista of surrounding rugged mountains and green agricultural fields.

Yuma's history dates back to 1540, when Hernando de Alarcon, the Spanish explorer, became the first European to scope out the region. From 1540 to 1854, Yuma was under the flags of Spain and Mexico, but in 1854 became a territorial possession of the United States through the Gadsden Purchase. In the 1850's, Yuma served as the major river crossing for the California gold seekers. From the 1850s to the 1870s, steamboats on the Colorado River transported passengers and goods to mines, ranches and military outposts in the area, serving the ports of Yuma, Laguna, Castle Dome, and others.

Today, the city of Yuma is a major tourist destination with a thriving economy and plentiful opportunities for outdoor recreation. With recently completed projects including the establishment of six new community parks, the construction of the Yuma Art Center and restoration of historic downtown buildings, Yuma looks to remain a terrific place to live, work and explore.
