Show Low AZ Community Profile & History
Show Low, Arizona is a city perched atop the the Mogollon Rim in east-central Arizona. Settled in 1870, Show Low purportedly takes its name from an 1876 poker game between founders C.E. Cooley and Marion Clark. Legend has it that, having decided there wasn't room enough in the settlement for the both of them, the two men agreed to let a game of cards decide who was to move. They played through the night until Clark finally said, "If you can show low, you win." Cooley turned up the deuce of clubs (the lowest possible card) and replied, "Show low it is." Show Low's main street is named "Deuce of Clubs" in remembrance of the event.
At an elevation of about 6,400 feet, Show Low serves as a major year-round resort, with excellent opportunities for hiking, scenic drives, fishing, camping and other outdoor recreation along the Mogollon Rim and in the nearby White Mountains. Popular destinations include Show Low Lake, Fool Hollow Recreation Area, Pintail Lake and two 18-hole golf courses.
