Paradise Valley AZ Community Profile & History
Paradise Valley, Arizona is a thriving town just outside of Phoenix, the state's capital and largest city. Home to twelve resorts, a deluxe 18-hole golf course and scenic Mummy Mountain Wildlife Preserve, Paradise Valley has emerged in recent decades as one of Arizona's premier vacation destinations. Situated in a broad, lush valley to the east of Phoenix, Paradise Valley was named by developer Frank Conkley, who intended to build a canal through the region stretching some 140 miles, in 1899. Though the canal project never came to fruition, a few enterprising souls established small cattle farms on the newly irrigated land. Settlement began in earnest after World War II, when a booming tourist and resort industry drew thousands of new residents to the Greater Phoenix region. Incorporated in 1961, Paradise Valley has successfully maintained a quiet countryside ambiance even while surrounding areas have seen large-scale commercial and industrial development. A close-knit rural community at the edge of one of America's fastest-growing urban centers, Paradise Valley offers the charm and natural beauty of a small town with all of the economic and cultural resources of the city.
