Marana AZ Community Profile & History

Marana, Arizona is a growing town located northwest of Tucson in Pima County, Arizona. Situated along Interstate 10 in the southern part of the state, Marana boasts a rich agricultural history and a close-knit rural atmosphere alongside an expanding tourist and service economy.

Though Marana was not incorporated until 1977, the region was settled by the Hohokam people thousands of years ago. Prospectors seeking gold arrived in 1854, instead finding an abundance of high-grade copper ore in the desert expanse of the Silver Bell Mountains. When the Southern Pacific Railroad built a depot in 1881, Marana was given its present name, which means "a jungle, tangle, or thicket"; as railroad workers hacked through the dense brush of the largely undeveloped region, the name seemed more than appropriate. Marana emerged as an agricultural center following World War I, with staple crops including cotton, barley, wheat, alfalfa and pecans.

In recent years, Marana has enjoyed dramatic economic growth; strong management, a prime location between Tucson and Phoenix and gorgeous natural surroundings continue to attract businesses and new residents to the area.
