Holbrook AZ Community Profile & History
Holbrook, Arizona is a small city in northeastern Arizona. First established as a stop along the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad in 1882, Holbrook serves as the county seat for Navajo County. Once a roughshod frontier town populated by cowboys, ranchers and railroad men, Holbrook saw renewed prosperity upon the completion of historic Route 66, which drew millions of young families west after World War II. Situated at the junction of Interstate 40 (which overtook Route 66 in the 1970's), State Highway 77, State Highway 377 and U.S. Highway 180, Holbrook remains a center for commerce, trade and tourism in the region.
Surrounded on all sides by the breathtaking natural scenery of eastern Arizona's high desert plateau, the city of Holbrook offers excellent opportunities for recreation, sightseeing and leisure. Just east of town is the stunning Petrified Forest National Park, which features striking geologic formations, Native American rock etchings, ancient Navajo dwellings, and one of the world's largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood. At the heart of Holbrook's downtown is Navajo County Courthouse, now on the National Register of Historic Places and home to the Navajo County Historical Museum. On the edge of town sit the peculiar guest dwellings of Wigwam village, still in use as motel rooms and also named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Other nearby attractions include the Painted Desert (which begins at the northern edge of Petrified Forest National Park), Canyon De Chelly National Monument, the Navajo, Hopi and Zuni reservations, Homlovi Ruins State Park, and the ski resorts of the Mogollon Rim.
