Chino Valley AZ Community Profile & History
Chino Valley, Arizona is a small town in north-central Arizona. So named by Lieutenant A.W. Whipple, who derived the name from the Mexicans' word for the abundant grama grass in the region while traveling through in 1854, Chino Valley served as the site of Arizona's first territorial capital in 1863 and 1864. In 1895, a narrow gauge branch of the United Verde and Pacific Railroad to Jerome, joining the Prescott and Arizona Central, was completed, and Jerome Junction was established. Between 1900 and 1925, the activities of Jerome Junction were absorbed by Chino Valley.
Incorporated in 1970, Chino Valley remains largely rural in nature today, though its location along Interstate 89 allows for convenient access to the cities of Prescott and Flagstaff.
