Somers, New York is a town in northern Westchester County. First established as Stephentown in 1788, the town was renamed for naval hero Richard Somers in 1808. Now a bustling commuter town just over an hour’s drive from New York City, the community offers an array of historical architecture and a wide variety of cultural attractions.
Popularly known as the “cradle of the American circus,” Somers is home to the Elephant Hotel, established in 1820 by Hachaliah Bailey after he purchased an African Elephant and began exhibiting the animal throughout the northeast. Bailey later expanded his traveling show to feature other exotic animals and eventually merged with other variety troupes to create the modern American circus in the 1830’s. Named a National Historic Landmark in 2005, the Elephant Hotel is also the current home of the Town Hall. Other notable sites in town include the 654-acre Angle Fly Preserve, named after the last brook-trout spawning stream in Westchester County; the Wright Reis Homestead; Lasdon Park and Arboretum; and Lake Lincolndale, which offers swimming, fishing, and boating.
