Maricopa, Arizona is one of the newest and fastest-growing cities in Arizona. Less than a half-hour’s drive south of Phoenix, the city serves as both a residential hub for the Greater Phoenix region and a rapidly expanding center for commerce and retail. With a visionary infrastructure and tremendous prospects for future economic growth, Maricopa has emerged as a 21st century city of the first order.
Incorporated as Arizona’s 88th city in 2003, Maricopa boasts a long and colorful history that belies its official creation just five years ago. As early as the mid-1800’s, Maricopa Wells (as it was then known) served as a major water source along the Gila Trail. By the 1870’s, the area was home to an important junction for the Southern and Pacific Railroad, and as a result the community of Maricopa Junction was established in 1887. Within a few years the town’s name was shortened to simply “Maricopa.” Economic and cultural activity in Maricopa slowed after the decline of the railroads in the 1930’s, but by the last decade of the 20th century the unabated growth of the Greater Phoenix region prompted an influx of new residents that continues today.
Nestled at the foothills of the Sierra Estrella Mountains, the city of Maricopa offers excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, sightseeing and entertainment. Popular attractions include Harrah’s Ak-Chin Resort and Casino, The Duke Golf Club at Rancho el Dorado, Royal Dunes Golf Club, and the Sonoran Desert National Monument.

Climate
Due to its great size and variations in elevation, the state of Arizona has greatly varying climate conditions from one area to another. Lowlands are predominantly desert, with very hot and dry summers, cooler nights and moderate winters. The state's northern plateau has a significantly cooler climate, with mild summers and frequent snowfall in the winter.
Population:
One of the fastest-growing states in the nation, Arizona has a population of over 6.1 million, an increase of more than 1 million since the year 2000. The state's population is largely concentrated in the metropolitan areas of Phoenix and Tucson, the state's two largest cities. While there are smaller population centers around Yuma (in the southwest corner) and Flagstaff (in north-central Arizona), vast areas of the state remain largely uninhabited, due in great part to the desert climate.
